Human networking
In addition to the above formal presentations we plan to have informal 'networking' times, and displays from 3rd party TriMedia partners.
VENUE
The venue is Kingston University London. Their web site is at:
http://www.kingston.ac.uk/
Specifically, the TriMedia collaboration is with Kingston's Faculty of Computing, Information Systems and Mathematics. Their web site is at:
http://cism.kingston.ac.uk/
LOCATION
Kingston University London is in the town of Kingston upon Thames which is (unsurprisingly) on the River Thames and is the borough town of the London Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. You can find general and tourist information about Kingston upon Thames in the Wikipedia article and tourism web sites below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_upon_Thames
http://www.kingston.gov.uk/leisure/tourism
(NOTE: Make sure to quote "Kingston upon Thames" or you may end up hundreds of miles north in Kingston upon Hull, or possibly in Jamaica).
TMUG will be held in the Roberts Lecture Theatre, Sopwith Building, Penrhyn Road Campus. The most convenient entrance is from Fassett Road, and is shown on the Multimap web link.
You can use the Multimap to investigate the surrounding area and facilities.
TRANSPORT
Kingston upon Thames is in London, so is well situated for transport. All four London airports are reasonably accessible, though Heathrow is closest (in fact quite close). Travel within London is best on London Transport (now also called "Transport for London"), whose web site is:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/
You can find travel routes using any means of transport for anywhere in the UK from the UK Government's Transport Direct web site:
http://www.transportdirect.info/TransportDirect/en/Home.aspx
HOTELS
The most convenient local hotel is Hotel Antoinnette whose web site is:
http://www.hotelantoinette.co.uk/
Their rooms cost about £65 for a double and £50 for a single (those are in UK Pounds Sterling, which is currently about $1.94 (US dollars) or 1.5 euros. The hotel is comfortable, slightly traditional but modern, with restaurant, and faces the University Fassett Road entrance (if you get to the Multimap for LOCATION above, then you can find Fassett Road - the hotel is about five minutes walk. When I checked there were plenty of rooms for the TMUG dates but they do get booked up so it might be worth reserving early - the hotel accepts bookings confirmed with credit card which can be cancelled without penalty up to 24 hours before booked arrival time. The weekend may become busier so it may be even more worthwhile to book early if you are staying Friday and Saturday nights - but see the option to move to central London County Hall hotel below.
There is also a Travelodge, which is a cheap and cheerful modern hotel chain. This is further from the University venue but nearer to the rail station and Kingston town center (which might make it a good choice for people who may be accompanied by people who want to go to central London). I think their rooms cost about £100 (UK Pounds Sterling) but this varies. Their web site is:
http://www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_hotel/hotel/hotel_id/49/KingstonUponThames
Also, for those who will be accompanied and whose companions want to be really in central London, I recommend the Premier Travel Inn County Hall. This is in the old London County Council government building which is opposite the Houses of Parliament and so is very central. It is right beside the London Eye and they sometimes do a room rate that includes free London Eye tickets and a river boat cruise on the Thames. It is about ten minutes walk from this hotel to London's Waterloo rail station, and from there you can go by train to Kingston (upon Thames, please) and get the true London Commuter Experience (although in reverse, since you are traveling out of city center) .
